Le Cauchais
Le Cauchais is a traditional Normandy farmhouse, restored to a high standard, situated in a very peaceful hamlet, close to the bustling town of Saint Lô within easy distance from Bayeux, Caen and the many museums and beaches of the Normandy Landings in 1944. The house overlooks the peaceful pastures of the Normandy “bocage” and is surrounded by small green lanes, excellent for hiking. As well as a pleasant dining room and a large living room with a fireplace, the outside terrace, overlooking a wildflower garden with trees and a small pond, provides a very attractive area beneath a shady awning, for breakfast or supper. The large double bedroom has a bathroom, a small adjoining dressing room and a lovely view of the countryside.
Although Le Cauchais is situated in peaceful countryside, it is very close to Saint Lô and several excellent restaurants. Normandy is famed for its wonderful cheeses, cider, cream, apples and its traditional cuisine. You can buy many of these things at the local farms where they are made, for picnics or to take back home with you. There are several very good fish restaurants along the coast. The chateau of Balleroy is very near here, owned by the Forbes family and well worth a visit. Bayeux is a very attractive Normandy town, untouched by the ravages of time and home to the famous Bayeux Tapestry. War museums and cemeteries are found all along the coast and for several miles inland – the largest museum is the Memorial at Caen, about 40 minutes drive away, as is the famous Pegasus bridge. Saint Lô is also home of the largest National Stud in France, which can be visited during the week. It also puts on spectacular shows of riding skills from time to time.
The house a typical Normandy farmhouse, built of stone. The guest dining room, which has the stairs to the second floor, leads into the large living room. Most of the furniture is antique, brought from America with some English pieces. The beamed living room has a fireplace, comfortable sofa and chairs, books to read and general information about Normandy. A large television with English channels and board games are also available for guests.
The guest bedroom is large and light, furnished with a double bed, chairs, mirrors and a dressing table and bureau. The en suite bathroom has a bath and hand-held shower, wc, washbasin and fluffy towels. A hairdryer is provided. This in turn leads into a small dressing area with space for hanging clothes.
Breakfast consists of orange juice, a choice of cereals and jams, butter, croissants, French bread, tea, coffee or chocolate.
Dinner is available by request in advance. A sample menu could be: warm goat cheese salad, salmon en croute with vegetables, followed by lemon ice cream, and wine.
